 CHAPTER ACTIVITIES:
MonthlyChapter publishes and distributes its newsletter to all chapter members. In addition, the newsletter is distributed to the members of the Japanese Ancestral Society of Portland on a subscription basis, making it a truly "community" newsletter.
MonthlyUnite People, the Portland JACL youth group, volunteer at the Goose Hollow Homeless Shelter in Portland. They prepare and serve dinner and assist families with laundry and child care.
2009
01.03The chapter celebrates Oshogatsu at the residence of Dr. Jim Hearn with numerous special Japanese delicacies prepared by Dr. Connie Masuoka. Hundreds of people attend.
02.09In 2009, Portland JACL teams up with the State of Oregon which selects Stubborn Twig, a book about the Yasui Family, a Hood River Nikkei Family in the 1930s & 1940s, as its Oregon Reads selection. This sets up "Day of Remembrance" events all over the state with Portland JACL co-sponsoring many of these events with Chapter members participating in several talks and programs.
02.21In 2010, Portland JACL partnered with the Hispanic Community to hold a joint Day of Remembrance which included the showing of the film Stand Up for Justice: The Ralph Lazo Story as well as a panel discussion with key members of academia and the Nikkei and Hispanic Communities.
12.15Chapter Board Election results: Three new board members are elected, with Jim Kennedy and Jeff Selby as the new Co-Presidents. 20% of our board is "new blood" with less than 3 years' tenure.
12.16Board members participate in the annual calendar "mailing party" to mail out 750 calendars to chapter members and key community partners.
2010
01.01The chapter celebrates its Oshogatsu at Chinese Village Restaurant with the Installation of Officers done by the District Governor.

01.05Graduation Banquet Committee attends the kickoff meeting for the 2009 Graduation Banquet to be held May 3, 2009.
01.08Portland JACL Board is invited and attends the Portland State University event hosted by the Center for Japanese Studies entitled: Postwar Masters of the Japanese Print: The Reingold Collection.
01.11Portland JACL Board attends the kickoff of the Oregon Reads Program with the Book Stubborn Twig by Lauren Kessler, with keynote by Lawson Inada, the Poet Laureate of Oregon, which was held at the Beaverton Library.

2009
01.17Portland JACL co-sponsors Mochitsuki 2009 at the Portland Community College with the Oregon Nikkei Endowment and Portland Taiko. 2500 people attend the annual event of food, culture and entertainment.
01.31In celebration of the Oregon Reads program, the Minidoka Swing Band plays at the Tigard Library. The Portland Chapter also has a membership and information booth during the event.
02Portland JACL Board members attend and support the Chinese American Citizens Alliance fundraising dinner at Wong's King Restaurant.
02.04As part of the Oregon Reads Program, Mitzi Loftus, a Portland JACL member, does some storytelling about her experiences growing up during that time. Many Portland Board members also attend the event.
02.05Board members attend a lecture by Junko Ochi, Deputy Consul General of Japan in Portland, at Portland State University.
02.06Portland JACL Board attend a JAVA sponsored event honoring of Mrs. Tsuboi, a local Nikkei community elder who has done much philanthropic work nationally for the Japanese communities.

04.11Portland JACL and community Scholarship committee interviewed 25 students for 15 scholarships that will be awarded on May 3rd.

05.03Portland JACL joins the Nikkei Community in celebrating the 62nd Annual Japanese American Graduation Banquet honoring 60 graduates and awarding 15 scholarships.
05.16Portland JACL sponsors a booth at the annual Richmond Elementary School spring festival. Richmond Elementary runs the Japanese Immersion Program in Portland. The Portland JACL youth group, Unite People, also had a separate booth and promoted scholarships and youth events.

05.25Portland JACL joins the Nikkei Community in honoring deceased community military members at special ceremonies at the Rose City and Lone Fir cemeteries.
05.28Portland JACL sponsors a teacher in-service workshop in Washougal & Evergreen School Districts. The workshop is facilitated by Dr. Linda Tamura, with Portland JACL providing the JACL Curriculum guides to the 25 teachers in attendance.

06.03Portland JACL sponsors a table and attends the Japan-America Society of Oregon's annual banquet at the Benson Hotel. Keynote speaker was the Ambassador of Japan to the United States, the Honorable Ichiro Fujisaki.
06.05Board members attend the Rose Festival Queen's Luncheon at the Doubletree Hotel. Vice-President of the JACL youth group, Rachel Seeman, was a princess representing Grant High School.
06.06Board members attend the Rose Festival Queen's Coronation ceremony at Memorial Coliseum. Rachel Seeman was crowned as Queen of Rosaria.
06.11Portland JACL board members attend the "Say Hey Northwest" gathering at the Weiden & Kennedy Building. Say Hey is a networking event for new minorities to the Northwest.
06.19Board members attend the Unite People (Portland JACL Youth Group) end-of-year banquet where new officers are sworn in, including Co-Presidents Rachel Seeman, Natalie Rojas, and Jon Lee. Event was held at the Cherrywood Retirement Center.

9.12Portland JACL board members attend the breaking of the fast dinner with the Muslim Educational Trust. This event is the official end of the Ramadan, a 30-day fasting period in the Muslim faith.

12.19Unite People, the Portland JACL youth group, put on a Holiday Dance at the Multnomah Athletic Club as a fund raising event as well as a recruiting tool. There were 60 students who attended this event.
