Coffee and snacks will be provided. Bring brooms, dustpans, buckets, tools to pull grass between the bricks.

This was the talk back session after the play, "Yo

This was the talk back session after the play, "Yohen," playing at the Brunish Theater across from the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. This is one of the best plays I have ever seen. Philip Gotunda, a Sansei playwright is a masterful writer (on the far right). The story is about a long married couple who are struggling with their marriage. The play is a conversation between the two, a retired Black GI and his Japanese wife, which brings up memories of their courtship, their families, and their choices in life. It was so authentic and real. What is so amazing is that what is unsaid is just as powerful as what is said. The actors are terrific. Get tickets at PassinArt and use discount code JACL

Join us in cleaning up the Japanese American Cemetery in April and May! Help us care for our community cemetery located within the boundaries of Rose City Cemetery.

Our cleanup at the Waterfront was very successful! We did lots of weeding, picking up trash, and snacking. A few teens from our youth group (@unite_peoplepdx) showed up. We hope to see more people next time to continue celebrating and appreciating our culture and history!

Last Sunday, Mitsuko "Mitzi” Asai Loftus, along with her son and co-author David Loftus, spoke at Powell’s City of Books about her recently released memoir, From Thorns to Blossoms: A Japanese American Family in War and Peace. The book chronicles her childhood growing up in Hood River and her family’s time in various concentration camps during World War 2 to her adult life as a high-school teacher, a college instructor, and a Fullbright Scholar teaching in Japan.
