Urgent call to join together - demolition of the Yamaguchi Hotel

March 12, 2023

Cultural and historic erasure continues. Join us for this community action and ceremony to honor the role of Yamaguchi Hotel in the history of Nihonmachi and the Japanese American community.

Urgent call to join together:
Sunday, March 12
2pm
Meet at the Japanese American Museum of Oregon
411 NW Flanders St, Portland

This historic building is scheduled to start being torn down on the morning of Monday, March 13. The Japanese American Museum of Oregon, along with our partners at the Architectural Heritage Center and Restore Oregon, vehemently opposed this demolition, but were unfortunately unable to prevent it. The tear-down date was then unexpectedly changed and will occur much sooner than anticipated. We ask you to join us on Sunday to honor this important building where Masae Yamaguchi served as the community's midwife and the Yamaguchi family ran a hotel from 1921-1941. Together we will place origami cranes in remembrance of this historic site.
