Earlier this week, Portland JACL in solidarity with 15 other Asian American organizations, submitted a letter to the Oregon Chief Justice's Criminal Justice Advisory Committee urging them to begin discussions on the inclusion of bias crimes in the hold until arraignment category.

Currently, Oregon's criminal justice system overlooks the valid concerns of public safety by releasing accused perpetrators of bias crimes back onto the streets before arraignment. Released perpetrators are then able to act, yet again, on the animus against a particular group of people.

This letter was written and delivered following the recent brutal attack on a Japanese family out riding their bikes in Portland. Our communities should no longer constantly feel threatened by the "catch and release" of perpetrators of such bias crimes. Our community deserves to feel safe.

On Friday, August 5, Governor Kate Brown signed Senate Bill 1509 designating Oregon Hwy 35 as the Oregon Nisei Veterans World War II Memorial Highway.

The purpose of this highway is to honor and remember these soldiers who went above and beyond in their service to their country while facing discrimination and violations of their civil rights at home.

We are still trying to reach our fundraising goal! Please consider donating at the link in our bio to make this happen! All donations will go towards the interpretive signage for the highway, as well as the dedication event.

Oregon PSR (Physicians for Social Responsibility)

Oregon PSR (Physicians for Social Responsibility) and community partners invite all to join us for the annual Portland-area memorial to the victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The event will be hosted at the Japanese American Historical Plaza on the Portland waterfront on Monday, August 8.
