On March 28th, 1942 Minoru Yasui intentionally wal

On March 28th, 1942 Minoru Yasui intentionally walked the streets of downtown Portland to break the military curfew put in place against all people of Japanese ancestry following the signing of Executive Order 9066. This was the first of many actions Yasui took to fight against the xenophobic and racist laws targeting Japanese communities during WWII. After WWII, Minoru Yasui continued to spend his life and career advocating for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community, and BIPOC folks.

In 2015 President Barack Obama honored Yasui’s legacy by awarding him a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom. Shortly after, the Oregon legislature designated March 28th as Minoru Yasui Day.

This year, the Minoru Yasui Legacy Project invites youth to participate in their student contest and address the prompt, “Each of us is a member of a community in which we may have responsibilities. What is a responsibility you have in your community?” Please submit your entry before May 14th, 2023. Link in bio.

Join the Japanese American Museum of Oregon (JAMO) for a very special Min Yasui Day! This year, there will be an official dedication of the jail cell where Min spent nine months in solitary confinement fighting for justice for all Americans, as well as a panel discussion.

Minoru Yasui was most well-known for his courageous stand against military orders that resulted in the forced removal and imprisonment of over 110,000 persons of Japanese ancestry during World War II, but his entire life was committed to the defense of human and civil rights, and justice for all.
